Locality: Boron Open Pit, Boron, Kern Co. California, USA

Description: California’s Boron Mine is the largest open pit mine in the state and accounts for approximately a million tonnes of processed borax per year which is one third of all Borax production in the world. Approximate pit dimensions are 1.75 miles wide, 2 miles long, and 750 feet deep. A variety of minerals occur here but colemanite is one of the most iconic collector quality specimens. It is very nice to find bright yellow calcite in association with the colemanite crystals. Ex. James W. Ahl Collection #2088
