Azurite, Malachite, Sepon Mine, Vilabouly District, Savannakhet Province, Laos
Size: 11.0x10.0x5.3 cm
Species: Azurite, Malachite
Locality: Sepon Mine, Vilabouly District, Savannakhet Province, Laos
Description: One of the best Azurite specimens I have seen from this locality. While thousands of specimens were recovered from this area only perhaps 30-50 specimens of this quality were found in a small 10m vertical zone at the mine in 2012 according to a source with intimate working knowledge of the locality. Like almost any modern mechanized mine many more specimens were likely mined through and unfortunately destroyed. The color is a vivid saturated blue. The combination of sharpness and luster is stunning it looks like the crystals were faceted. The azurite crystals are up to 2.1cm in size and are in perfect condition. The edge of the vug is surrounded by chatoyant fibrous malachite. The piece has an iconic aesthetic. Comes with a custom sunnywood acrylic base.
