Azurite on Goethite, Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona, USA

$2,500.00

Size: 3.1x3.0x2.5cm

Species: Azurite on Goethite

Locality: Bisbee, Cochise County, Arizona, USA

Description: Arizona is famous world wide for its massive copper deposits. Perhaps the most famous of these deposits are found adjacent to the town of Bisbee located in Cochise County. The copper deposits around Bisbee were fabulously rich and produced approximately 8 billion pounds of copper over the lifetime of its various mines (Graeme, 1981). Even more valued than the countless pounds of base and precious metals that made the miners of that era wealthy, were the aesthetically stunning mineral specimens that were produced. Bisbee has quite a variety of mineral species, with over 337 identified species according to (Graeme III, 2020). However for all the variety, the one that makes the heart race of any collector, whether novice or veteran, is a good Bisbee Azurite.

This specimen is what I would call a “fine” mineral. It has top notch luster, color, aesthetic arrangement, provenance, is from a historical mine, and is on matrix. The royal blue 1.5cm rosette has a wonderful vitreous luster and is complete 360 degrees. It sits pristinely in a bed of black botryoidal goethite. The goethite serves to add a lovely color contrast to the specimen and further enhances its aesthetics. This fine specimen comes with the previous label from the Grace and Hub Dafoe collection from California. Simply put this is one of the most aesthetic and historically important specimens I have ever had the pleasure of handling from Bisbee.
