Calcite, Malmberget, Gallivare, Norrbotten County, Sweden
Size: 10x5.5x3.5 cm
Species: Calcite
Locality: Butterfly Twin Pocket, Malmberget, Gallivare, Norrbotten County, Sweden
Description: I am pleased to present for your consideration a stunning golden calcite specimen from the Butterfly twin Pocket collected in the late 1980s at the Malmberget mine in Sweden. Upon examining this specimen the crystal appears to have been twinning down into the matrix from which it was removed. Its attribution to the Butterfly Twin Pocket was confirmed at the 2026 Tucson show by Peter Lyckberg who originally collected this pocket. It is important to remember that the Malmberget mine is one of the largest iron mines in the world and still actively operating. The area these specimens were collected in has been inaccessible for more than 30 years.
This specimen is iconic of the deeply saturated honey orange colored crystals that make this locality so desirable among mineral collectors. This single crystal has an absolutely pristine termination with no visible damage anywhere else either. The sides alternate between an etched matte surface, and lustrous faces that allows the observer peer inside the gemmy interior. Top notch quality, and glows under any lighting. Comes with a custom cut acrylic base.
