Cerussite, Yanga Koubenza, Mfouati, Bouenza Department, Republic of the Congo
Size: 9.5x5.5x4.5 cm
Species: Cerussite
Locality: Yanga Koubenza, Mfouati, Bouenza Department, Republic of the Congo
Description: A robust and lustrous black cerussite from the NEW FIND at Yanga Koubenza. The specimen is dominated by two large crystals up to 4.7cm thick. This unusual coloration of the cerussite is likely due to inclusions of unknown sulfide minerals. Other localities such as Tsumeb with visually similar material are reportedly colored my small inclusions of galena. It is not known which particular mineral happens to color these specimens. There is an unknown reddish brown mineral that forms both partially dissolved casts and botryoidal masses on the left side of the piece. This is likely hematite but has not been confirmed by analysis. A very interesting and unusual cerussite from this fantastic new find.
