Species: Fluorite

Locality: Boundary Cross Vein, Nenthead, Alston Moor, Eden, Cumbria, England, UK

Description: Pale yellow fluorite with good luster and sharp edges from Nenthead. An aesthetic presentation and slight internal zoning visible. There is nice translucency on the fluorite, which fluoresces a blinding blue under UV light. 19th Century Spar Box

These spar boxes were built in the 1800’s by miners who had a tradition of making detailed objects from the minerals found while mining for ore. They ranged from simple arrangements to ornate designs and fantastical scenery. These creations were occasionally a competition and often sold as souvenirs. At the time they were generally viewed as trivial and consequently very few were preserved.

The Boundary Cross Vein was a major mineralized zone within the Rampgill Mine in Nenthead. Commercial production halted and the last active underground workings shut down in 1994.
