Fluorite, Pyrite, Eagle Picher Mine, Naica, Saucillo Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico
Size: 7.5x7x6 cm
Species: Fluorite, Pyrite
Locality: Eagle Picher Mine, Naica, Saucillo Municipality, Chihuahua, Mexico
Description: Translucent, modified cubes of lilac purple to pastel green fluorites, with lustrous faces and sharp edges. There is glittering pyrite on the underside that appears cast after another mineral. In fantastic condition, I note no damage to the display face, with crystallization continuing all around. The Gibraltar Mine in Naica was purchased by the Fresnillo Mining Company in 1955, and subsequently began operating as the Naica Mine. Prior to this change in management, Gibraltar had been operated by Eagle Picher Mining. That is likely the source for the name of the mine as provided on old labels with this specimen. Ex: Gene Schlepp, Alfred M. Buranek, E. Mitchell Gunnell, Dave New
