Description: This interesting combo features a rare cadmium carbonate mineral first found here at the Tsumeb Mine. Specimen has been analyzed and confirmed as otavite. See attached photos and excerpt from analysis below. There is vibrant rosasite as a backdrop and associated cerussite as well. Good luster and color, with nice botryoidal form and sharp edges, respectively. Ex: John Magnasco

“An assemblage of early cerussite, white rhombohedral micro-crystals, and late rosasite. The white rhombohedra have a high luster, and are in fact otavite. Micrograph taken. It is well known that otavite is a member of the calcite group, and is isostructural with several other species, including calcite, siderite, and smithsonite, all of which also occur at Tsumeb. For that matter, dolomite and minrecordite have similar X-ray diffraction patterns. However, the intensities and peak positions of these species are quite distinct and vary dramatically with composition. For further precision, the unit cell was refined. ASCII data file also supplied (.xy file). The refined unit cell of this otavite is: a =4.9084(3) Å; c =16.2614(9) Å, which is an excellent match to published values.”
