Rhodochrosite, N'Chwaning II Mine, Kuruman, Kalahari Mn Fields, Northern Cape, South Africa
Size: 2.4x2.0x1.4 cm
Species: Rhodochrosite
Locality: N'Chwaning II Mine, Kuruman, Kalahari Mn Fields, Northern Cape, South Africa
Description: An gorgeous red rhodochrosite with an intriguing basal termination. Typically these flat topped specimens tend to be more cloudy and not very lustrous. This specimen defies that convention with blood red color and intense luster. The unique flat topped specimens are caused by a second generation of rhodochrosite that grew over primary scalenohedral rhodochrosites according to Cairncross, Bruce, et al. The Manganese Adventure. 1997, p. 141. This is a top end thumbnail from a classic locality, it does not get much better for the size and style.
