Rhodochrosite, Quartz, Sunnyside Mine, San Juan Co., Colorado, USA
Size: 20.0x9.9x8.9 cm
Species: Rhodochrosite, Quartz
Locality: Sunnyside Mine, San Juan Co., Colorado, USA
Description: Here is one of the larger specimens I have had of rhodochrosite from the Sunny Side Mine at 20cm! The specimen has a very aesthetic composition of white sparkling quartz with rhombs of pink rhodochrosite up to 1.1cm scattered about. The mine is of course infamous for the disaster that occurred in 1978 when the mine working breached a lake above the mine causing a massive flood. The fast inflow of water and debris it carried with it surely would have killed anyone underground. Thankfully the disaster occurred on a Sunday when the miners were not working and no lives were lost. Ex. Ronald Harvey
