Locality: Uchucchacua Mine, Oyon District, Oyon Province, Lima, Peru
Description: The combination of glistening red rhodochrosite crystals (1.5cm) with black manganese matrix and glassy colorless quartz is top notch. The specimen is so sharp and has so many lustrous faces it appears to be naturally faceted and throws a spectrum of reflections when moved in a case. For those un-familiar with the Uchucchacua Mine it is a Ag-Mn-Pb-Zn replacement epithermal vein replacement and skarn. It was amazingly diverse in it’s mineralogy due a complex sequence of multiple mineralizing events. The mine produced 10 Type Locality specimens and 71 minerals are reported as valid from this locality on Mindat. But at the end of the day for the majority of collectors the locality is perhaps most remembered for these although more common, superbly aesthetic rhodochrosites.
