Description: This extremely lustrous smithsonite from the San Antonio Mine has light green color and nice botryoidal form. The San Antonio mine produced a large amount of smithsonite specimens over its life. Perhaps the most famous finds occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The specimens that were found on Level 8 of the mine were markedly different from previous finds. Rather than large lumpy masses these specimens were well defined “rice grain” or “bow tie” habits and they had exceptionally superior luster compared to the previous material produced. These specimens were quickly snapped up by advanced or savvy collectors who recognized the superb quality of these pieces. This specimen features a vug of semi isolated crystals sitting on a contrasting goethite matrix. This small cabinet example is in great condition. I note a couple dings along the outer edges that do not distract.
