Smithsonite, San Antonio Mine, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico
Size: 7x4.5x3 cm
Species: Smithsonite
Locality: San Antonio Mine, Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico
Description: The San Antonio mine produced a large amount of smithsonite specimens over its life. Perhaps the most famous finds occurred in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The specimens that were found on Level 8 of the mine were markedly different from previous finds. Rather than large lumpy masses these specimens were well defined “rice grain” or “bow tie” habits and they had exceptionally superior luster compared to the previous material produced. These specimens were quickly snapped up by advanced or savvy collectors who recognized the superb quality of these pieces. This particular specimen features a deeper blue coloration than many specimens from this find. The color perception is further enhanced by the contrasting orange gossan matrix. An absolutely classic Mexican specimen and a dreamy piece for any smithsonite collector.
