Tanzanite, Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mtns., Simanjiro Dist., Manyara Region, Tanzania
Size: 3x2x1 cm
Weight: 6.8 grams
Species: Tanzanite
Locality: Merelani Hills, Lelatema Mtns., Simanjiro Dist., Manyara Region, Tanzania
Description: A gemmy, multi-terminated crystal of tanzanite from the type locality for this variety of zoisite. An unheated crystal with unusual color zonation. There is what appears to be an almost colorless zone running through the middle of the crystal on the right and a colorless zone at the tip of the leftmost crystal. This unusual coloring would have been destroyed during the heating process if this crystal was treated. This piece displays strong trichroism appearing blue along one orientation, violet along another orientation, and pink/red along the c axis. The vivid color is outstanding and the specimen glows when backlit. In fantastic condition, I note no damage to the display face.
