Tourmaline, Nhranga Mine, Alto Ligonha District, Zambezia Prov., Mozambique
Size: 10x1.5x1.5 cm
Species: Tourmaline
Locality: Nhranga Mine, Alto Ligonha District, Zambezia Prov., Mozambique
Description: Here we have a fabulous, translucent, multicolored gem tourmaline from Mozambique. The specimen came to me with a label pinpointing the locality as the Nhranga Mine, which does not have a large amount of information published online. It is almost certainly from the Alto Ligonha pegmatite field, a large area stretching approximately 200 km in diameter that contains many gem-bearing pegmatites.
Even disregarding the unusual locality, this tourmaline is easy to appreciate, with excellent luster, sharply striated sides, and an undamaged, complex termination. The specimen displays a very unique coloration, with a vivid green base that shifts to a steel blue in the body before becoming purple, and finally transitioning to a bright green termination. The specimen is pristine and does not have any restorations or repairs. It is vibrant, backlights well, and shows strong pleochroism under plane-polarized light. An excellent gem tourmaline for any collection. Comes with a custom-cut acrylic base.
