Tourmaline, Rubaya, Bahunde, Masisi Territory, North Kivu, DR Congo
Size: 4.0x1.3x1.2 cm
Weight: 10.3 grams
Species: Tourmaline
Locality: Rubaya, Bahunde, Masisi Territory, North Kivu, DR Congo
Description: This is a very fine specimen of glassy blue and green color zoned gem tourmaline from the Congo. For the past several decades the Congo has produced tourmalines from a number of localities (Laurs et al., 2004, Henn, 2010; Laurs 2015). Usually, these specimens were from weathered deposits produced as by products industrial mineral mining and were not of gem quality (The Journal of Gemology Volume 35 / No. 8 / 2017). Then a number of years ago pieces of fantastic quality were discovered. Remarkable gem rough and high quality collector specimens were being produced in relative abundance. Then abruptly the region was hit by several natural and political catastrophes and production halted. It has resumed at a mere trickle of what was once being produced from this region. This is a great example of the high quality collector specimens that were once coming out.
