Wulfenite, Red Cloud Mine, Silver Mining Dist., La Paz Co., Arizona, USA
Size: 9.5x7x5 cm
Species: Wulfenite
Locality: Red Cloud Mine, Silver Mining Dist., La Paz Co., Arizona, USA
Description: A fantastic example of wulfenite from one of the best localities in the world for the species. The Red Cloud mine is renowned among collectors both domestically in the United States and internationally among mineral collectors. Originally discovered in the 1870s mine has been operated since the 1930s for specimens by famous collectors and dealers including Ed Over, Brian Lees, Wayne Thompson ,and others. A collector simply needs to see one of these superbly orange wulfenite specimens in hand to understand why this locality is so storied. This particular specimen displays lustrous, saturated orange blades on a massive calcite matrix, with minor associated rhombohedrons of white calcite crystals. The beveled edges form sharp terminations and there is translucency visible throughout. I note a few crystals that were broken near the base but do not overly distract. An eye catching specimen that comes with a custom cut acrylic base.
